The global economy encountered myriad obstacles this quarter, which collectively served to stunt economic growth and downgrade expectations for performance in the near term. Together, the European and U.S. sovereign debt debates generated significant financial angst and volatility, and increased risk aversion across many market sectors, including commercial real estate. Figure 2 shows the divergence in economic growth (GDP) per capita across countries over the last four years. Note that the countries lying on the left-hand side of the chart, which are growing quite well, are generally those that have account surpluses, while those on the right are suffering under account and sovereign debt burdens. There is a distinct correlation between economic growth and lower external and internal debt burdens. Link Here
